Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida · The 800-Step Walk Down to Bali's Most Photogenic Coast

Diamond Beach is the headline beach of Nusa Penida's eastern coast and one of the most photographed shorelines in Bali. From the clifftop, you see a perfect crescent of soft white sand tucked between two limestone headlands, with the Indian Ocean rolling in in a long glassy arc. From the sand itself, the cliffs tower 200 metres above you and the water is a startling gradient of pale aquamarine over the shallows to deep blue further out.

It is not the easiest beach to reach — getting down requires a solid staircase carved into the cliff — but the payoff at the bottom is something most of Indonesia does not have.

The descent

Roughly 800 steps cut and bolted into the cliff face, descending from the cliff-top car park to the sand. The path is concrete in the upper sections and turns to stone and dirt steps in the steeper middle sections; handrails are present but not continuous. Most able-bodied visitors take 15–25 minutes down and 25–40 minutes back up, depending on fitness and how often they stop for photos. There is no shade on the staircase — bring water and a hat, especially in the morning.

Best time of day

Diamond Beach is one of the few Nusa Penida beaches that genuinely rewards an early start. Arrive at sunrise — the sun rises over the headland behind the beach and lights the cliffs in warm amber, the sand is essentially empty, and the only people down on the staircase are photographers. Midday visits (10 AM – 2 PM) are the worst: full sun overhead, the cliffs throw shadows across the beach, and the staircase is crowded with day-trippers. Late afternoon is the second-best window, with softer light from the west.

Best season

Dry season (April to October) is safer for the descent — wet stone steps are a real slip hazard. The dry months also give the clearest water and the calmest swell at the shoreline. November to March is possible but expect rougher sea and intermittent rain.

Entry fee and facilities

There is a small entry fee (IDR 10,000 per person at the car park, as of 2026), paid in cash. Inside, there are simple warungs selling cold drinks and coconuts near the car park and at the bottom of the staircase, plus a handful of sun-bed rentals on the sand. Toilets are basic but present. The bay itself has no lifeguard — the currents and seasonal swell mean you should not swim out far, especially on rising tides.

Pairing with the surrounding eastern stops

The eastern coast is a half-day loop in itself, and Diamond Beach is the most-photographed stop, but it pairs well with three other points, all within a 10-minute drive of each other: Atuh Beach (a smaller, more sheltered cove five minutes east, with a floating platform that photographers love), Raja Lima (the five-king viewpoint, looking out over a row of small rocky islets), and Rumah Pohon Molenteng (the cliff-side bamboo tree house). Together, the four stops make a single very full East Island day — start at sunrise at Diamond and you'll have the whole coast to yourself.

Getting there from Semabu Hills

We are on the south-western coast, and Diamond Beach is on the south-east — roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car, depending on the section of rough road between Atuh and the central hub. With an early 5 AM start, you can be at the top of the staircase in time for sunrise. We offer a private East Island day that picks up at first light, drops you at Diamond for the sunrise, and works around the coast through midday, with a late lunch back at the resort.

If you want to keep it simple

Sunrise visits are dramatic but require an early alarm. If you'd rather not move before breakfast, our afternoon East Island loop still gets you to Diamond for the late golden light — bookable via WhatsApp once your stay is confirmed.
