Nusa Penida is the island off the southeast coast of Bali, administratively part of Klungkung Regency. It is famous for its sheer cliffs and crystal-clear waters — Bali at its most untamed. A fast boat from Sanur reaches the island in roughly 45 minutes to an hour.

Main destinations
The island is broadly split into a west coast and an east coast, each with its own headline viewpoints and beaches.
West coast
Kelingking Beach — the iconic T-Rex-shaped headland that drops into a turquoise cove. The hike down to the sand is steep, with chains and ladders to hold on to, and takes around 30 minutes each way. Be honest about your fitness — the descent is not for everyone. Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) is a sea arch formed from a collapsed cave, photogenic from the cliffside platform. Angel's Billabong is a natural infinity pool carved into the volcanic rock. Crystal Bay is the main snorkel spot on the west side, with calm water and a reef full of reef fish.
East coast
Diamond Beach — a pristine white-sand cove reached down roughly 800 steps carved into the cliff. Atuh Beach — an arrowhead cove a short drive further east, fringed by limestone stacks. Rumah Pohon Molenteng — the famous cliff-side bamboo tree house that became iconic on social media. Raja Lima — the five-king viewpoint overlooking a row of small rocky islets just offshore.
Travel tips
If you only have one day, pick one coast — east or west — rather than try to cram both. Roads between the two sides are long, narrow, and winding; covering everything in a single day eats most of your time on the road.
Use only registered fast-boat operators from Sanur Beach. Public speedboats run frequently in the morning and crossings can be cancelled in heavy swell — keep a buffer day in your schedule.
Rent a scooter or hire a local car with a driver. Road conditions are part of the adventure — west-side roads are paved, east-side roads are rough and potholed in places, and the lanes are narrow with hairpin bends. If you are not comfortable on a scooter, the driver option is worth every rupiah.
Semabu Hills sits on the south-western hills about 20 minutes from most west-coast viewpoints, with sunset views over the ocean and Mount Agung on a clear day. It's a calm base for both the day-trip circuit and a slower, multi-day stay.
